[To see the plein air paintings done in Torres del Paine National Park, please visit the Portfolio page] This is the first painting that I completed after my return from Patagonia. The towers were what I painted most often when I was in the park, becoming somewhat of an obsession. Though the scale of the towers is breathtaking, it was the shifting colors of the rock that I found so enthralling. The towers were named for their bluish cast (Paine meaning Blue in one of the region's indigenous languages) but the colors of the rock escape definition. To me they seemed in constant transition, every shade of gray merging with yellow, blue, and even green. At sunrise the rocks shifted from purple to pink, then flaming red, orange and yellow as though the granite itself had caught fire with the intensity of the sun. This painting brings together three of my favorite subjects: the moon, the sky, and mountains.
